Can Google overcome its geek problem?

Google’s culture is defined by geeks and engineers — and that’s precisely why the search giant has struggled to produce a viable social network, argues Erica Naone. Ill-fated tools such as Wave, Buzz and Lively originated as engineers’ side projects and were never designed with actual users’ experiences in mind. To mount a genuine challenge to Facebook, Google will have to learn to put users first and engineers second, Naone writes.
